We recently reported our financial results and announced several significant actions we will be taking in the near future. 

I want you to understand how I view our performance, the challenges that we will face together in the coming months, and the role you will play in the company’s strategy.

Safety performance improved significantly, despite the fact that we had 999 employees injured during the quarter.

Our Occupational Illness and Injury (OII) rate dropped dramatically from a year ago, down from 99.9 to 99.9.

Two-thirds of our sites had no injuries at all, we saw a dramatic 99% reduction in injury rate within XXX operations, and the Asia Pacific Region achieved an extremely low OII rate of 99.9.

Any one of these achievements would be a reason for optimism.

When viewed collectively, they signal a renewed commitment to safety.

More remains to be done if we are to reach our ultimate goal of no injuries, however every improvement we make is another step on our “Safety Journey,” and I thank you for your efforts.

Reported sales for the quarter were $9,999 million, down 99 percent from 2000.

More dramatically, first quarter earnings were $999 million, or $.99 per share, far below the $.99 per share we reported last year excluding non-recurring items.

From a long term perspective, these levels of profitability and cash flow are highly unsatisfactory.

We are significantly behind of the commitments for financial performance.

There are a few bright spots, including growth in our Coatings business in XXX and XXX, growth within the superabsorbent segment of XXX, gains in XXX, an earnings increase of 99% for XXX, and solid performances from XXX, XXX and XXX businesses.

The fact remains, however, that this was the second quarter in a row with declining sales, profits and cash flow. 

Our response over the next few months must be swift and certain if we are to change this trend.

O desempenho da segurança melhorou significativamente, apesar do fato de termos tido 999 funcionários acidentados durante o trimestre.

Nossa taxa de Doenças e Acidentes Ocupacionais (OII) caiu drasticamente em relação a um ano atrás, de 99,9 para 99,9.

Dois terços de nossos locais não apresentaram nenhum acidente, tivemos uma redução drástica de 99% na taxa de acidentes nas operações de XXX e a Região Ásia Pacífico atingiu uma taxa de OII extremamente baixa, de 99,9.

Cada uma destas realizações seria razão para termos otimismo.

Quando visualizadas coletivamente, elas assinalam um comprometimento renovado para com a segurança.

Há muito a ser feito para atingirmos a nossa meta final, sem acidentes; entretanto, cada melhoria que fazemos é um outro passo em nossa “Jornada de Segurança” e agradeço a vocês pelos seus esforços.

As vendas relatadas no trimestre foram de US$ 9,999 milhões, 99 por cento menores quando comparadas com as de 2000.

Mais dramático foram os ganhos do primeiro trimestre, de US$ 999 milhões ou US$ 0,99 por ação, que ficaram muito abaixo dos US$ 9,99 por ação que relatamos no ano passado, excluídos os itens não recorrentes.

Sob a ótica do longo prazo, estes níveis de lucratividade e de fluxo de caixa são altamente insatisfatórios.

Estamos muito abaixo dos comprometimentos de desempenho financeiro.

Há, porém, alguns pontos de destaque, inclusive crescimento em nosso negócio de revestimentos em XXX e XXX, crescimento no segmento de superabsorventes de monômeros, ganhos nos revestimentos em pó, aumento de 99% nos lucros de materiais eletrônicos e desempenhos sólidos nos negócios XXX, XXX e XXX.

Entretanto, persiste o fato deste ter sido o segundo trimestre seguido com vendas, lucros e fluxo de caixa em declínio.

Nos próximos meses, nossa resposta deve ser rápida e determinada, se quisermos inverter esta tendência.
